lessons from a fallow period

blessed full moon, friends & fam!

I’m back from a fallow period. I think the last email I sent to you was in January o0

fallow ˈfaləʊ
adjective
(of farmland) ploughed and harrowed but left for a period without being sown in order to restore its fertility or to avoid surplus production.
(of a period of time) characterized by inaction; unproductive.
(of a sow) not pregnant.

noun
a piece of fallow land.

verb
leave (land) fallow for a period.

this time, I’m not apologizing.

in order to decolonize the way we work, we go back to the land. and the land has periods of fallow, of not producing anything, of retreat. and we need to make more space for this, more space for our humanness.

I actually wrote 1,500 words (LOL) on this topic, and I’m in the practice of taming the overwhelm & all the ideas so that they are more grounded, practical, SUSTAINABLE, and applicable. for me, for you, for folks yet to read these.

so, it’ll be a series! yay.

here’s lesson one:

🌟we need protocols for when the fallow period arrives

because it will. one of my online mentors, heenali (sacred weaver), calls them winter periods. and winter will come. cuz, like I started this note out with, we are human & we need to make more space for that.

especially cuz we are holding a lot & in a world that asks for constant output, constant fire energy, constant “productivity.” the antidotes are both sharing the load & allowing for periods of low output, of rest & laying down BEFORE it’s an emergency.

and cuz we also live in a world where rent & bills are paid monthly, every month, without a fallow period (infuriating, really), sometimes it’s not possible for all of us to truly revel in fallowing.

so, let's get creative!

like, let’s bring back reruns? for us solo/entrepreneurs & writers/artists who are all calling in folks we want our work to meet, why does it always have to be new content when we’re producing so much all the time?

- put on an out-of-office for the socials
- repurpose & republish work you’ve already published
- schedule these posts*
- show the kids how to play independently
- put in a plan for the laundry, for the cleaning, for the client delivery, for the caretaking, for all the tending that needs to continue
- if you work a 9-5 or a job where you *do* need to be on more regularly, how can you pull back a bit during these periods? ie, not give it your all. minimal effort.
- where can you delegate? where can you trade? oh! like, could someone do a takeover of your socials & maybe even the backend while you’re fallow-ing, and then when they are fallow-ing you take over there’s?

(I’d be down for this kind of trade if you are! money-free trade FTW! feel free to reply if you’re interested)

what are other ways you could honor your fallow periods, specific to your life circumstances (financially, creatively, with all the moving parts & people to care for, including yourself)?

so that they, all these beautiful things & people you tend to, can continue on, as contentedly as possible, without you. it’s a practice, no doubt, and it will get messy, but to me, it’s worth it.

cuz the beautiful life & people & work you tend to may be forced to continue on without you discontentedly if you don’t lay down & shut off the laptop (stats show! more on this in a later issue)

let's hold it together

if you need some support with putting these protocols in place, I’m designing workflows & systems for your life, work, & creative practice. mapping your rhythms (and those of whom you tend to, your family, your business, your practice) using your preferences (whether you feel best in the morning or at night, for example) and the gifts written in your birth chart.

I do this inside of 🌊find your flow🌊 (gotta change the name soon, though, cuz a white man life coach has a copyright on it 😭)

bundle find your flow with a mini-project systems build out, some examples:

- a project management system designed around your flow & life (like, finally using that planner & digital tool you bought/downloaded and haven’t touched... genuinely no shame & I've got the fix!)
- a content/writing workflow, one that meets you where you’re at & allows you to write/create AND tend to all the things
- a laundry/cleaning/caretaking flow for your home

okay, this is me trying to keep it short LOL.

thinking of & praying for each one of you.

may you find flow, ease, and joy woven throughout your days.

in gratitude & kapwa,
teresa

*I had a client say that batching & scheduling content felt like a literal ghost was sending out her words & energy, which I thought was so interesting & very real, so we made a system so she didn’t have to do that inside the find your flow + mini-project bundle.

TL;DR

make a plan/protocol for when you’re in a fallow period. I can help you with one!

read time: ~7 min happy full moon aquarius, jupiter in leo cazimi, Reader! this past weekend, my family and I were invited to join my partner’s brother’s friends/chosen family on their annual camping trip. we said yes, and it was a beautiful, unexpected three days “off-the-grid.” no reception, no phone, no tech. I believe hollywood grooms us to be afraid of moments like these, and I’m also not naive to the fact that could have been a dangerous situation, but we were in good company. we were...

hey Reader! this mercury rx has been slapping me right around 😅 hbu? lots has been going on behind-the-scenes, lots of ideas and movement and what we call in our house, action jaction!! all good things, really, and I feel incredibly blessed and grateful that the things I’ve been asking for are being shown in real time. and also, I’ve been rushing through things to check them off the list (iykyk). like, last week, I fired off this newsletter cuz it was on the list WITHOUT double checking,...

hey Reader, blessed new moon in cancer! what’s been coming up for you emotionally lately? how is it showing up in your work, home, and creative practice? feel free to reply if you’d like to share, or use this as a journal prompt. I’ve been thinking about “self-care” vs. “self-centered,” and the deep connection between care, home, and belonging. water, memory, ancestors, emotion—these are the themes of this cycle. so here’s lesson three from my recent fallow period: our first home is...
